How to organise design screenshots so you can find them again

Designers screenshot constantly: an interface that handles an empty state well, a poster, a room. A year later the camera roll holds thousands of them between receipts and boarding passes, and none can be found. Four habits fix most of it.

Move them out of the camera roll

A camera roll is sorted by date and has no way to say what a picture is for. Put references somewhere that is only references, so that opening it means you are looking for inspiration, not for a receipt.

Save the source with the picture

A screenshot with no link is hard to credit or revisit. When you can, save the link as well as the image, or add the app or site name as a note. Six months on, the name is often the only way back.

Describe it, or let something describe it

You will search in words: “dark onboarding screen”, “terracotta poster”. Filenames like IMG_4821 give search nothing to match. Either write a short note or use a tool that describes what is pictured and extracts the colours for you.

Keep a collection per project

A client’s references should not sit among your own. One collection per project keeps the board tight and makes it easy to hand over or delete when the work is done.

On an iPhone with Curatively

Tap Share on the screenshot preview and choose Curatively, or open Capture and pick up to ten photos at once. Curatively keeps its own copy and leaves your camera roll as it is. With AI processing on, each save gets a description, tags and colours, and you can search by describing it or browse by colour, source, format or date.
